We recently went to New York City. Like any "good" gay man, we decided to
take in a Broadway show or two. They decided to see "Cats" and "You're a
Good Man Charlie Brown." Not being total showtune queens, we had no idea that the
Tony Awards for the best on Broadway were the weekend we chose to visit. This meant
that tix for the best shows would be expensive and hard to come by.
Fortunately, we had an awesome stroke of good luck! While there, we mentioned to our
buddy Quinn that we were going to see some shows.
When we told him which ones, he immediately forbade us to see "Cats" (a good
idea...it's *too* old for words...*meow* <g>).
"You've gotta see my show instead!"
We had no idea that Quinn was the Company Manager for the hottest show on Broadway,
"Fosse!" Not only did he help us get decent seats for the show that had just won
the Tony for Best Musical, he also took us on a behind the scenes tour of the theatres in
the area. We also got to meet some of the dancers in the show. It was awesome!!
Here's what we saw...thanks to our (**ahem** single <G>) buddy Quinn.
Here's
Michael, one of the dancers in the show with QUINN.
Michael is also an accomplished pianist. His boyfriend is going to play "Tarzan"
at Disneyland this summer, also! ;-) |
Here's
a view very few get to see (unless you're Nathan Lane)...the theatre from the stage. This
is actually the Ford Theatre, where "Ragtime" plays. It's bigger and more modern
than the "Fosse" theatre, so Quinn thought we might like to compare. The light
at the bottom of the picture is actually sitting on the stage. It's called a ghost light,
and it's supposed to keep the spirits away when the theatre is empty. All traditional
theatres have a ghost light. |
This
a the mosaic tile floor in the lobby of the Ford Theatre. It was hand assembled, taken
apart, then reassembled here. |
These
stained glass windows are also part of the Ford Theatre. |
Here's
the view of the audience from the "Fosse" stage. Imagine it filled with people
waiting for you to dance you butt off, and you might begin to understand what the
performers are going through. ;-) |
These
days everything is high-tech, even Broadway shows. Here's the technical area backstage at
"Fosse." Even a relatively simple show like "Fosse" has a lot of
computers controlling things. The technical area for "Ragtime" was about four
times this big! |
Here
are some of the hats, gloves, gloves and other props the dancers use. Quinn said Bob Fosse
liked to use gloves in routines, since they covered up his hands, which he thought were
ugly. He also loved hats, since they covered his bald spot. |
Here's
QUINN with one of the costumes. Some of them have
all sorts of sequins and spangles and can weigh a lot. Remember these are dance
costumes! ;-) You have to be in great shape to wear a heavy costume and dance! |
Here's
the "Fosse" marquee the night we saw the show! |
Finally,
here's Michael, Quinn, and the two of us after a fantastic show! Two thumbs up! ;-) We
also saw "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown" the next day, and it was great also!
Thanks for everything, Quinn! ;-) |

While in NYC we also went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Here's a little of what we
saw there...
Rodan's
sculpture of Adam |
Rodan's "Thinker" |
Charlie
likes art! ;-) |
Here's
some hunky MuscleBearz wresting around on an ancient Greek vase. |
This
painting is called "The Horse Fair." As you can see, it's huge! It was painted
by a woman painter, Rosa Bonheur, who had to dress as a man to research the hunt she was
painting. (Thanks to Mac in NYC for the info here...) |
Here's
a close-up of Charlie's favorite part of the painting. |
Charlie's favorite painting at the
museum. ;-) |
John's
favorite painting by Seurat. It was the inspiration for the Broadway play "Sunday in
the Park with George." |
Monet's
"Sunflowers." It's great to see these famous paintings in person. You can see
the individual brush strokes and the depth of the paint. It really adds something to see
the actual painting. |
We also had a chance to visit some of the surrounding areas...
This
is Clinton, NJ. It's a fairly well known artists area. |
Here
we are near the river next to the waterwheel. |
We
met Jimmy Pellechia, a famous "power bodybuilder." You might have seen him in
some of the bodybuilding magazines. Anyhow, he's opened a supplement store on Long Island.
|
Here
we are after a vacation workout. |
This
is our buddy DARRELL, who was kind enough to give us
a place to stay on our trip. He's huge! ;-) |
We
got silly one night, and just started taking a bunch of pics. Here's proof that John's
arms are almost 21" cold! ;-) |
|
The Empire State Building. Next
trip, maybe we'll go inside it! |
